yearning for summer
I yearn for summer.
however, when I say this,
I am not referring to the season that returns every nine months.
I wish to be ten years old again,
running through gardens everyday with my cousins
whose grandparents are no longer breathing and
whose parents are no longer sleeping
in the same bedroom.
I wish to feel the excitement driving to a playground that
seemed the biggest place in the world to me
only because I was so small.
I wish to wake up free of anxiety,
my only concern being turning on the morning cartoons
as my mama made breakfast in the kitchen.
I wish to be ten years old again,
never fretting for my future
The idea so prevalent now
only a far whisper in the future.
I wish to be ten years old again,
but I guess I’ll settle for getting some ice cream.
The one thing I couldn’t enjoy when I was ten years old
Because I was worried about
wishing I was fifteen.
I wish to be ten years old.
The same age that I spent wishing
I was the age I am now.
I yearn for summer,
because it reminds me of the time I should have enjoyed the most.
