“We had a great time doing it, we split the money in half, and we swore never to do it again. We didn’t think it was important,” said both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, the authors of Good Omens. They made it extremely clear in the introduction that Good Omens was a side project that none expected to have blown up and sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

The premise behind the story is simple. The end of the world (AKA Armageddon) is coming. There are many characters, each playing their own unique part in this important event. The authors did a great job fleshing out each character individually, highlighting the uniqueness and reasons behind their actions. However, there were some repetitive moments in the book that detracted from the actual plot. In those short chapters, the new characters seemed to be added as a filler and didn’t have much backstory. Overall, the characters were likable and relatable, which added to the story's experience.

The story's structure is what sets it apart from other books. There were only a few sections in the book, but there were a lot of different “back and forths” between the different scenes. Sometimes it makes the text feel a bit choppy, and when you change between scenes quickly, it makes the book seem unbalanced.

Since the book was written by two accomplished authors with different writing styles, you can spot the parts where each author added their own style to the story. Their writing styles blended well and allowed for a smooth transition between scenes. The humor and everything were on point, even though I felt like there was more of Pratchett’s humor in the book.

Even though there are abrupt plot changes and always new things happening in the book, some core themes stay the same. The themes of friendship, human nature, and destiny are all present in the book at all times, being represented in a multitude of different scenes and events. This story was an incredible read, and I recommend it to others. It’s the first book I have read by these two authors, but after reading this, I would read the other books by them too!

The author's comments:

This felt like a really special book, prompting me to write a review about it. Hopefully, anyone who reads this book review leaves with a clearer understanding of Good Omens and is inspired to read it themselves!
