My parents gave me their parenting book

and left me to myself.

It infatuated each breath I took,

kept highest on the shelf.

I flipped through the musty pages

and hummed every word.

My nose itched with familiar phrases

and gears began to turn.

Look right here, this is my life,

the way I was raised to be.

This book here, cut like a knife,

today I’m amazed at me.

I move my hand up to the sky,

and I now know how birds can fly,

the world makes sense, so tell me why

it’s dark as far I can see.
