On the Outside, Looking In
I used to think you were my friend,
Friend until the very end,
But you have found a new, cool friend,
Very special, we'll call him Ben
And I am on the outside, looking in.
You used to talk; you used to paly
And I had int'resting things to say,
But yesterday, I noticed then
That you were hanging on to Ben
And I was on the outside, looking in.
I suppose I can't lay on the blame -
I hadn't been to any game.
But when I saw the two of you,
I wanted to talk and play with you.
But you ignored me, holding him,
And I was on the outside, looking in.
It was as if I didn't exist
(And in your world I'm sure I didn't).
I wanted to talk; I wanted to play,
But would I exist if I had your way?
I wanted to join you but didn't then
'Cause I was on the outside, looking in.
I suppose this is normal for ev'ry teen -
Everyone's together but you (so it seems).
I get ignored by my dear friend.
I feel lonely; my heart is rent.
But you are in your private world
And laugh when you are by him twirled.
But when I'm there, reality is in
And I am on the outside, looking in.
Don't think I'm jealous of your dear boy -
I'll find my own source of precious joy.
And maybe soon I'll make a friend
And ignore you - you'll want me then,
For you are on the outside, looking in.
So don't forget your dearest friends
Or the girl in the corner, looking in.
For when it ends like I know it will,
He'll find another and you'll know well
(And you'll have no one left to tell)
What it's like on the outside, looking in.
