Fall's Children (Had They Lived)
Had they lived,
They would have shook their fists
One more day
At those rif-raf kids
Perhaps they would have whistled
Their favorite tune
To the mocking bird outside their room,
Had they lived
Had they lived,
They would have sent their cookies
Fresh out of the oven
In the envelopes
Thinking of the man
Back in the day, they loved
When they proclaimed it to him by sending a dove,
Had they lived
Had they lived,
They would have kissed on the head
Their children
Who no longer depend
And waited at home
Rocking on their chair
Doing their sewing
Waiting for the news
That a grandchild is coming,
Had they lived
Had they lived,
They would have proposed
To the woman in grey
Fresh from her girlhood
The bells would have rang
Hand in hand
A ring and a ring,
Had they lived
Had they lived,
They would have called
Out to their mothers
When their riding horse balked
Perhaps they would have kicked a can
And called to their friends
When they saw a strange man,
Had they lived
Had they lived,
They would have known
What it is to play as a zoo
To turn the wheel
And make the cow go “moo”
Perhaps they would have learned to talk
About the things they thought
And would whisper to the corn
After they learned how to stand and walk,
Had they lived
