Shards of Emptiness

The moonlight gently reflects off of the still surface of the pond.

I stand there, silently listening to the chirping of the crickets.

In the distance, a coyote howls at the lonely moon.

The sad sound softly drifts through the air causing goosebumps on my arm.

I shiver.

Overhead the clouds pass by, casting ghostly shadows on the ground.

The fog slowly starts rising from the pond and the crickets stop,

Creating an eerie silence.

I glance down, and see my reflection, as if I were looking into a mirror.

I pick up a stone and skip it,

Shattering the glass-like water into a thousand pieces.

I look up and realize all I’m left with is the shards of the emptiness.

A picture of a the moon reflecting on the water inspired me to write this poem.
