She Fed Me Lies
My momma always told me
“You can do anything you can set your heart to.”
But I can’t run a mile in a minute
and I can’t lose enough weight to be
considered pretty.
I can’t tie my name around a boy’s heart,
and hope he’ll fall in love with me,
just me,
not my looks, my intellect, the size of my waist band.
My momma always told me
“We’re all the same inside and out.”
But I never understood why people thought
otherwise,
I never understood why the outside mattered,
when we’re all stained with the same color blood.
My momma always told me
“You are perfect to me”
But why does everyone else tell me different.
