Stranger
I saw you in the hall the other day
And I thought maybe
Just maybe
That if I smiled at you
Everything would be okay.
You would smile back
Say hi, ask me about my day.
I'd answer and keep going
And everything would be normal again.
And I passed you, so close to you
With a smile ready behind my face
And I looked at you
You looked at me
The corners of my lips got ready
To curl up into my cheeks
Just like I thought yours would.
But then they didn't.
You looked at me
Then looked away
Without a second glance
Without a smile
Without acting like you just saw
A friend you've been close to
For years.
You just looked away
And never looked back
Because you were searching for
His face
The face of the only one you
Care about now.
I continue on without hesitation
As if I simply passed a stranger
Because though something inside of me
Has been crushed
I don't know you anymore.
