Where I'm From
I am from a world filled with knowledge and life,
Where words read
Create unique worlds in the mind.
I am from the experiences of those before me,
From revolutionaries like Guevara,
To those close to me, like Tía Rosi.
I am from a city full of culture,
A community full of love and exuberance.
I am from Chelsea,
A place where I feel that I belong.
I am from Latina America,
Where my second homes, El Salvador and Puerto Rico, reside.
I am from the clap of making pupusas,
From the aroma of nuegados y flan.
I am from the purple that lines my walls,
From the blue “cíelo” my mother calls me.
I am from the yellows, blues, and whites of my birds' wings,
From their playful chirping that wakes me in the morning.
I am from those who have dared to soar,
Even when they had no wings to fly.
I am from the lost dreams of a generation,
From the contemporary reawoken spirits.
I am from the resilience of my culture and people,
Who took back their lands after colonial decimation.
But I am also from those with humble beginnings,
So I shall never forget,
The history that has brought me to where I am today.
