America
I can tell there is a problem,
because at fifteen I woke up,
said my eternal goodbyes to my friends,
and walked onto my high school campus.
I know there is an issue,
because every day I walk into school
with the knowledge that I may
not leave on my own two feet,
that day, sitting in a classroom
with tension thick enough to be
cut through with a knife-
shot through with a gun-
where every student and teacher in the room
has completely accepted
that they may leave today
in a body bag instead of the bus.
