Ribbons
Humidity, damp stickiness
clings to anyone within its grasps,
a warm, tasteless nothing.
The breeze, blowing through hair and rising up,
mindless chatter echoes throughout the courtyard.
Nothing important.
Birds sing their melodies, ones painful to the ear,
They’re not trying, but they ruin the peace.
Shimmers of gold,
Ribbons dancing happily through the wind.
They stand as important,
awareness for the suffering they represent.
Cheerful color represents sadness,
Gilded plating of hope.
The color joyful no more,
Royalty no more.
Gold is melancholy.

This is actually an old piece from middle school that I got far too attached to! I wrote this about five years ago during cancer awareness week at school. The prompt? To sit outside and write a poem about what was there. If it's not obvious from my post history, I have an adoration for yellow/gold in terms of literature, and this is where it started.
