River Red
How could her hair be so big
She was only fifteen
Standing over the cliff
Of her own self esteem
She took the hand
Of the boy she loved
Walked him down
To the River Red
“But my mama said”, he said:
“Rivers are blue
Like democracy blue”
Our girl showed him the red on his hands
The River Red was red
“Tend your ears to the troubles and screams,
Open your mouth to the sound of hope”
She sings along
The river was red
Tomorrow,
He will take another girl to the River Red
And she will say
That the river was blue.
