Beyond The Bridge
She hears the waves roaring, the wind whistling through the palms.
She is beyond the edges of humanity now-she cannot be seen, cannot be heard.
She sees the pearly white bridge ahead and hears the seagulls crying to her, welcoming her.
And now she is across the bridge, sinking into the hot sand, breathing in the salty air.
How strongly her heart beat as she lay down-she was bound to this place, could not leave!
And she could feel the grains of sand sliding between her toes, getting stuck in the crevices-
And now she is diving into the white-crested waves, feeling the cold water rushing over her head
She comes up, gasping for air, and feels the sun beaming upon her face.
Oh, how she wishes she could stay, could feel the sun upon her face forever!
But now she is leaving, her towel wrapped around her waist.
She sees the bridge ahead, hears the seagulls crying goodbye.
And now she is across the bridge, and she looks back-
There is the untended bridge, slowly decaying into the bubbling stream-
And across the stream, the end of the bridge stretches into the endless pines.
