“The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it
Its only job is to eat or consume everything around it
In order to protect itself from this mad city"

-Kendrick Lamar, from "Mortal Man" in album To Pimp a Butterfly

We drench ourselves in yellow, basking in the rays of light;

We taste yellow, our honey-coated tongues savoring the sweetness of the color;

We touch yellow, our fingers running through sunflower fields, mapping individual silky petals;

Yellow is the color of radiating happiness.

But I am covered in yellow,

And to me, it does not always radiate happiness.

I used to make jokes about my skin,

Saying that if someone was attracted to me, they must have yellow fever.

I played off my biggest insecurity as jokes rolled off of the tip of my tongue

So I could sample the blanket of yellow laughter that followed-

And it never tasted like honey.

However, I have come to terms with the color yellow.

I have dislodged myself from the stereotypes that follow my skin color,

I have conquered the color and made it into my unique shade.

Today, I douse myself in yellow, wearing it like gold.

The author's comments:

This is a piece I wrote about being Chinese. It's not something I've always been proud of- I used to make jokes about my skin color because I felt so insecure in the yellowness of my skin. Today, I am proud to be Asian and I hope this poem displays that.

**note: my computer does not allow me to view the pictures, so my apologies if the picture does not go with the poem, I just searched up "yellow" and selected a random icon
