this is why i live
The strings
Squeaking like new shoes
The fire crackling
The gentle swaying of the crowd
My voice, echoing over their heads
It's sunset
All the eyes are on me
I pretend like it's nothing
I pretend like no one’s there
But i know
This is why i live
It's 5 years later
I’m the opener
Everyone want my superior
But he’s not there yet
It is only me
I’ve got one chance
To show them
What i’m worth
And if they like it
I will know that
this is why i live
They loved it
They loved me
They still love me
I get to play on my own
With the lights shining brighter
Then they ever have before
And when those lights flash on
I am reminded that
This is why i live
It's been 20 years
I still perform
But not as often
I’m getting old
I’m getting replaced
Like parts on an old car
But when i think back
To the days of the campfire
I realize those times
Where when i was happiest
I realized those times
Where when
I still knew that
This is why i live
I limp up there
Onto the old wooden stage.
The kids look up to me
As if their inspired
By the sounds the strings make
Slowly
They start to sway
Swaying like they did years ago
Back in ‘86
When i was happy
But i slowly finish the song
The swaying stops
And the applause comes to me
Like a bullet train
I raise my guitar above my head
And soak it up
And for my last day
I remember that
This is why i live
