Rag

I was born with a rag in my mouth.

It is pink

and bloodstained.

I am not useless,

But I am forced to speak

A LITTLE LOUDER.

Rag-mouths tend to be ignored

As closed ears hear

Who they want to.

This rag

Chafs my cheeks

Gags me

Scores my throat

open

But it is my fault.

I was born with it.

The author's comments:

It is no secret that women are often not taken seriously. They have to work especially hard to be noticed or recognized, almost like their voices are muffled by a rag. I wanted to illustrate this through an extended metaphor.
