I’ve always been a person who loves cheesy romance films, from watching Hallmark movies every Christmas to rewatching classic love stories like The Parent Trap or Titanic that leave me with butterflies everytime I watch it. When a recommendation of The Proposal came to me from a friend, it became my next-to-see movie.

The Proposal is a romantic comedy that follows the fake engagement of Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a Canadian book editor who faces deportation from the U.S., and Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), her assistant who agrees to marry her in exchange for a promotion. The two travel to Alaska to meet Andrew’s family and convince an immigrant agent of their sincere love, but they soon discover that they have real feelings for eachother.

The movie is a typical example of the genre, with a predictable plot, cliched characters, and a happy ending. But—it is also a charming and entertaining film, thanks to the chemistry and charisma of the leads, who manage to make the most of the cheesy dialogue and awkward situations they continuously find themselves in. Bullock and Reynolds are likable and funny. They have a close bond that makes their relationship believable and engaging.

The supporting cast is also noteworthy, especially Betty White as Andrew’s eccentric grandmother, stealing the spotlight in every scene she’s in with her hilarious practical jokes and one-liners. Oscar Nuñez also provides some comic relief as Ramone, a local resident who has multiple jobs and talents.

The movie is set in the picture-perfect town of Sitka, Alaska. The beautiful landscape and quaint small-town vibe provides a refreshing backdrop to the story. This aids in enhancing the romantic and comedic elements of the film, from the jaw-dropping mansion the couple stays at, to the breathtaking mountains right in the backyard. In addition, the contrast between the busy city life and the tranquil Alaskan town adds depth to the characters’ journey.

Anne Fletcher’s direction balances comedy and romance, creating a feel-good atmosphere throughout. Her focus on character development is evident,  particularly in the main roles, making the audience invest in their journey. Fletcher ensures that the pacing is brisk throughout the film, keeping viewers interested and entertained. Despite the predictable plot, she manages to bring freshness with her direction.

The Proposal is not a groundbreaking or original film, but is a well-made and enjoyable one, with a great balance of humor and romance. It is a movie that will interest fans of the genre as well as of the stars. The Proposal is a movie that will make you laugh and smile, and maybe even warm your heart.

I was interested in writing a review about this movie in specific because it was so memorable for me. It had me smiling and laughing the entire time, and was just a great and cheery movie overall. I wanted to promote the movie incase there was a chance that it became one person's new favorite movie. I was encouraged to submit to this contest by my composition teacher, Mrs. McCann.
