SUZUME! Girl, Chair, and Cat
Released on April 14, 2023(USA), the movie Suzume no Tojimari directed by Makoto Shinkai, was a big hit. The story starts with a 17-year-old girl, Suzume, meeting a mysterious young man on her way to school. The young man, Souta, asked her if she knew if there was an abandoned area nearby. Out of curiosity, Suzume followed Souta, this is where everything started. Evil escaped, a strange cat took a liking to Suzume, and Souta turned into a chair. An adventure full of unknowns had started.
Makoto Shinkai, a famous director known for his unique animation, directed other popular anime movies such as Your Name and Weathering with You. Suzume has become one of the highest-grossing anime movies along with these two movies.
Stemming from the 2011 Earthquake in Japan, the movie explained the beauty of natural disasters, specifically earthquakes, and the sad aftermath that comes with them. Not only does it talk about natural disasters, but it also talked about the feelings and memories of places that are forgotten.
Suzume is not the typical romance anime that Shinkai has created. Instead of only focusing on just between the male and female lead, it is more focused on character development in general. Living on with the memories of loved ones that are never coming back, the courage to make a change and sacrifice, and the fear of losing more precious ones. This is what Suzume is about.
Shinaki was successful in creating this movie. He didn't create a romance-centered movie, it is not about a boy and girl, it is about a person and others. He created a movie that is full of hope, even if you lose someone, you will move on. There are going to be more natural disasters that happen and ones that already happened, even though it might be sad and one might lose all hope, you will be all right and will live on.
