The warm sun beaming on her skin. The fresh summer breeze, the picture perfect life of childhood, and suddenly it’s gone. One test, one diagnosis, one day, is all it takes to change a life.

The movie Midnight Sun by Scott Speer tells the story of a 17 year old girl, Katie, with a life threatening illness. She is living with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a sensitivity to sunlight, stopping Katie from living her life. You may ask how she does it? Tinted windows, specialty doctors, and music. Her love for music is what keeps her going and helps her find her way in the world. Once the sun is down, she goes to a train station with her mom's old guitar that was left to her after she died. Katie plays the music she writes, helping her face her problems rather than running from them.

This realistic drama makes you feel lucky to walk outside every day with the hot sun beaming on your skin. Not only just a movie but it tells a story with love and compassion. Yes, it is heartbreaking but it is the type of movie to lift you up. It represents teens being curious and eager to go out and explore the world. Although, if you are trapped with nowhere to go, time will pass, making each day feel the same.

No doctor can find a cure to this illness but Katie continues to live her life even if it's through tinted windows. Constantly worrying about her love life is the hardest thing about her journey. Never being able to socialize, go to school, make friends, makes it harder to find a significant other. However, the one thing Katie wanted most in the world was to go for a boat ride and feel the hot sun beaming on her skin. That was her last wish if she were to die.

Midnight sun by Scott Speer is recommended for young adults; it delivers a strong message to live life as you want to live it and everything will fall in line. It is the type of movie that makes you realize life is special and you shouldn’t take it for granted.
