Is it true that your spirit only finds peace when you pass away? Until the Quiet Comes is a short, impactful film by Khalil Joseph that intends to communicate with the viewer through the music of Flying Lotus, an American record producer. The visualizations and scenes in this film attract the viewer emotionally. The setting is a gang-infested Los Angeles neighborhood. The story revolves around a young boy who plays the lead role in this short film. The boy continues to relate a story about his awful lifestyle, which he, like everyone else, is forced to experience.

With no words, this film emotionally communicates a great deal through music. The first words we hear from singer Erykah Baduh are "dream of nothing, light and ladder." Erykah is implying that there is nothing to dream of in a place where violence is everywhere and getting somewhere you dream of is almost impossible. To put it another way, all one can think about in a society like this is ending up dead like everyone else around you.

I believe the story's message is reflected in the title "Until the Quiet Comes" which we also see in the film. With so much tragedy and confusion all around you, death seems to be the only way out. Death is a ray of light with a ladder leading your spirit to peace and freedom. The boy appears to be attempting to tell us something by sharing his memories with us in the short clip before he learned what his life is going to be like. Looking back on the moments when he was laughing and playing with the other kids, when he believed in dreams.

In my opinion, this film is a true masterpiece of art. From its structure to its powerful message, the short film shows us something we have never seen before. I, too, have had a similar experience, therefore I understand how difficult it is to envision a bright future when violence is closing all doors.

Not only do I think it is a good film but many people who have seen this film will also agree with me, claiming that the art is emotional, breathtaking, and deep. With 4 million views and 39 thousand likes the critics are amazing. Until the quiet comes is for an audience who can understand the concept of death and peace. I highly recommend this film to everyone who is interested in magical realism.

My name is Angel, and I'm a senior who chose this short film to review for film studies class. For the first time, watching Until the Quiet Comes left me speechless and full of questions. I had to rewatch the video at least ten times. I got the solution to my question every time I viewed the video, but that simply led to additional questions. I really enjoy the film, and you might get a different impression from me after seeing it.
