Could Gene Forrester’s average life take such a turn that he could lose almost almost everything important to him? A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, takes place in a suburban area at a private school for boys in 1943. Devon School, the preparatory school Gene Forrester and his best friend Phineas attend, is where the story takes place as an adult Gene takes the readers back in time and explains events which changes his life forever. War is a key element in this story, not just throughout nations but friend ship as well.

Gene Forrester an average A+ student is best friends with an off the walls energetic and fun loving guy. Gene soon becomes jealous of his best friend, Phineas, which causes many problems. One is that he shattered his friend’s leg into pieces. Through the ups and downs of their friendship and twists and turns of World War II approaching, the boys try to resolve their issues which possibly makes things even worse.
     

I think A Separate Peace is a well written book which deserves to be read by many. It is relatable to the audience and young teens who can also be going through friendship problems as well. Knowles brilliantly creates a journey for the reader which brings them to reality but also keeps a smile on their face in optimistic hope.  He also shows how everyday conflicts are everywhere in life, big and small, which anyone can overcome. A Separate Peace is easy, amusing and extremely smart is each way. It is a diversity between characters and cannot get any better. I highly recommend reading this book!
