Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz
What kind of 14-year old gets involved with the government’s secret intelligence program? The Alex Rider series will keep you on the edge of your seat with an abundance of crazy stunts and impossible predicaments.
I think the book plots in the Alex Rider series were creative, but predictable. The plots do end up getting really repetitive after a few books. For example, Alex always gets kidnapped- and ‘miraculously’ gets away. Also, Alex always pulls off an incredible stunt. But, even with the repetitiveness, the plots are still usually interesting. For example, an international popstar intercepts American nuclear missiles and fires them at Washington D.C. And, a terrorist organization tries to create a tsunami intended to wipe out Australia.
Some characters in Alex Rider are pretty far fetched--- such as a man with the Earth tattooed across his questionably round head. Anyway, Alex Rider is a really well developed character. You can pretty much guess what he is going to do after a while and you can visualize him well. But, everyone else is unpredictable. You couldn’t predict if they were about to kill you or not! It doesn’t help when there are new characters every book.
The cool thing is, all of the things in the book could happen in real life. Such as, the bad guy’s plans. In one book, an assassin planned to kill the U.S. secretary, or the fact that the villains actually DIE. It really annoys me that in some books the ‘hero’ wins and in the next chapter the bad guy comes back for more. Anyway, Alex’s stunts might seem unrealistic, but they actually could happen (with some luck). One time he tightrope walked across to another building on a thin cable. He also jumped off of a waterfall in a canoe.
In conclusion, Alex Rider was a pretty good series. It would probably deserve a four out of five.
