Skinny by Donna Cooner
“I won’t hide. Or cower. Or apologize. I know there’s room for me out there. I step into the light.”
Skinny is a realistic novel about a 302 lb. girl named Ever Davies. She struggles with her unhealthy weight and an invisible enemy that sits on her shoulder and tells Ever what people are thinking and also negative things about her appearance. The whisper is something Ever can hear. The story takes place at her high school which she attends. Being a 16-year old girl, her life consists of rude comments, comfort foods, hope for fairy tales to come true, a best friend, broken family, and Skinny. Ever decides she wants to change herself when her weight becomes too hard to handle. With the help of her best friend since childhood, Rat, and the gastric-bypass surgery, her life begins to change as her weight and size drops. Now Ever hopes to become part of the school musical, to find her “prince charming”, and to find her inner beautiful self. To me, this was one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. Seeing how Ever went from being unhealthy to healthy emotionally and physically made me tell myself that anything is possible if you keep your mind and heart focused on your goal. The author made me wish I was another character in a story, supporting Ever as another friend. The book inspired me to look for my true self. We are all beautiful inside… we just need to dig deep and let it shine. To all my peers: read this novel!!! This book tugged my heart in all different kinds of directions. As I said earlier, I wished I could be a supporter to Ever as she continues with her difficult journey to having a healthy weight and confident mindset. Skinny constantly messed up her thoughts. Will she ever get rid of this horrible whisper? Read this book to find out!!!
