The book the Contender by Robert Lipsyte is a inspirational book. The main character Alfred has a hard life. His choice of friends cause him trouble. Such as to get beaten up or having to do what his friends say. The only way for Alfred to get away from the bad influences of his friends is to take up a hobby. Boxing provides this positive outlet.
Middle school boys would like this book he most. They would relate to Alfred and learn the importance of never to give up even when life gets hard. Alfred never gave up on his boxing dream. Along the way of his journey, he even tried to help his friend out of a hard time of his life. Read this book to see if Alfred becomes the contender he wants to become.
