The Cay by Theodore Taylor

May 3, 2011

The Cay by Theodore Taylor is a great book for many people. This story has three major themes survival, sacrifice, and overcoming prejudice. This story starts slow but speeds up quickly. So this is my review on The Cay.

This book has three major characters Phillip Enright Jr., and Timothy. Phillip is a young boy from Virginia. Phillip has recently moved to a small island called Curacao. Timothy is a man who has worked on a boat his whole life. Phillips mother wants to go back to Virginia and take Phillip along to keep them out of danger, but that’s exactly what she does when she refuses to take a plane and gets on a boat. The boat gets torpedoed and Phillip get hit with a board and separated from his mother and awakes with a large black man, and a cat

The theme of the book is split in three with the themes as survival, sacrifice, and overcoming prejudice. I thought the Themes where interesting in some cases. The point of view is told in Phillips Point of view and state of mind. The mood is basically survival, and waning to see another day. The story as it progresses the characters also mature and realize that they need each other to survive.

I thought this was an interesting book. I liked this book it wasn’t to bad it was kind of slow at first, but as I said before it speeds up. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes survival story’s I give this book a 4/5 because of the slow beginning but I still liked it

My final review is it is a very well written book. I liked it in some spots. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy realistic fiction. I liked how it sped up quickly.
