Printz Honor Book, Many Stones, a 2000 Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist, by Carolyn Coman is a story telling the hard life of a sixteen year old Berry Morgan. Coman has also published several other books including; Tell Me Everything, What Jamie Saw, and Bee and Jacky. Many Stones is a mystery/drama. The book is a “everybody” book. The title plays a main part in the book. Berry uses a unique way to relax, stones. Whenever she feels the need to relax or calm down she goes in her room and puts stones on her back to relieve stress. If you haven’t read it the title doesn’t make sense, especially since the cover is of a girl in a pool. Many Stones takes place mostly in South Africa. The story timeline is told in present day. Berry, her dads are the main characters of the story. The book is revolved around Berry’s problems in life, her dealing with the murder of her sister, and the relationship she doesn’t have with her newly found dad. Then her dad is dealing with a difficult love life with a daughter that doesn’t agree on half of his decisions, and that’s just too hard to please. Berry and her dad never really hit it off, even when they lived together. Berry could always tell that her sister, Laura, was her dad’s favorite. Her sister eventually graduated high school and headed off to college. After college Laura decided to work as a school volunteer in South Africa. Soon after she is in South Africa she is brutally murdered. Her death surprisingly brings her dad back into berry’s life. A year after Laura’s death her dad arranges a trip for berry and him to go to South Africa to attend Laura’s memorial service in Cape Town. They also went on a tour of South Africa, Laura’s home for the time she taught. Berry changed her whole life just to deal with the grief of her death, so maybe this trip will change it back the way it was. A quote that stood out to me the most throughout the book was; “she missed you when she was here with us. And now we all miss Laura terrifically!”-priest I think what Coman wanted to get out of this book was to show people how to handle situations that aren’t always the best.
