Have you ever noticed how unceasingly dull it is to watch prehistoric Christmas specials year after year? Or have you ever looked at the grunting, roaring crowds that invade malls with the mission of completing holiday shopping, and frowned in disgust? If you have, know that you are not alone and that there is a book for you, the disgruntled holiday hypocrite. Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris is the perfect book for those who can't stand the over-commercialized Christmas season.

Holidays on Ice is based on the author's life and comprised of stories about his own Christmas experiences and others he has imagined. It chronicles his time spent as a Christmas elf in Macy's Santaland and explains the torturous, yet exhilarating, obstacles he faced while bedecked in a green pair of tights and a spangly hat. It also picks apart the greedy tenacity of the creators of holiday miniseries in the story of a rogue executive producer who travels to a town of well-meaning country folk in an effort to buy the twisted plot line of his next project.

Holidays on Ice is generally a sour, mocking, unhappy book, but it is honest and funny in its description of the selfishness that does indeed exist during Christmas, which makes it irresistible. It makes light of human nature and humorously captures the reasons why people clamor for that last Cabbage Patch doll.

Holidays on Ice is for a mature audience and does include some vocabulary inappropriate for young readers. But for the most part, it is witty and will hopefully put a new spin on your holiday season this year.
