Most of Colleen Hoover’s books are romance novels. However, Verity stands out the most because Colleen Hoover writes a thriller. Colleen Hoover’s name and novels are well known in the TikTok book community (BookTok). Many book lovers in the community are not fans of the American author. Colleen Hoover is a young-adult American author with four of the most read novels on Goodreads. I came across this book due to being a fan of Colleen Hoover’s previous books but Verity is stepping into new territory. Verity is an amazing book and easy to sink into because the plot line isn’t a typical reused one where as soon as you read a few chapters you already know the ending. I can say for myself, I was extremely agape about the ending of the novel. Verity is a suspenseful book that leaves you with more questions than answers. 

Verity is about an upcoming author, Lowen, who takes on the job of finishing the last novels of a well known author’s series; which she can't finish due to being in an unresponsive state. Upon taking on this job Lowen finds that the first draft of the author, Verity, manuscript reveals more heinous details surrounding Verity’s true colors. Lowen admired Verity and was in awe of her. She was a successful writer who had a similar writing style as her. Verity was everything Lowen wanted for herself. But, as Lowen dug more into Verity’s past and actions, she became terrified of the author she adored before. More terrified of how nobody knew besides her. Verity manipulated everyone around her and nobody knows it besides Lowen. 

Verity is the most interesting character in the book because of how she acts in the manuscript. Verity seems unworldly. A mother who is selfish and rotten to her own flesh and blood to the point where she does the unthinkable to her daughters all for her husband’s undivided love. In the novel, Verity grows jealous with the life she created. Jealous that her husband can love someone on this earth more and unconditionally than Verity. She only wants her husband to love her, nobody else. Not even their daughters. I think it's interesting to read the thoughts and emotions of someone who is purely evil. Throughout the book you are taken on a roller coaster of emotions with Verity. At times she seems likable but at others she’s the worst human being. 

This book will teach reader’s how to not be easily deceived. People can appear one way but their true intentions are hidden behind the ‘nice act’. 

Throughout the book I was on a wave of deception from multiple characters. Not knowing what is true and what is false. Relying on my own intuition on who I think is lying throughout the book. Everyday people lie to our faces but reading about it is a whole new eye opener. For example, Verity “manipulated” everyone into thinking she was a caring wife and mother. Sometimes you don’t see the unexpected because we are to blind to realize the major red flags.  

If you are a Colleen Hoover hater due to her prior hopeless romantic books, you should read Verity. We only ever see the red flags until after. When it’s too late.
