Unscripted Review
As I was reading Unscripted: The Unpredictable Moments that Make Life EXTRAORDINARY, I felt as if I was Ernie Johnson Jr.'s right-hand man, by his side all the way. I was emersed in Ernie’s life, from his childhood memories with athletics, to his love and relationship with his Dad.
Ernie Johnson Jr. is well known for his work in sportscasting. Ernie is employed for Turner Sports, he is the host of the popular television show Inside the NBA on TNT, and the voice of the MLB for games televised on TBS. Ernie is a high-profile person who has had a great deal of success in his life so far. I decided to read this book because it looked like a book that someone that enjoys sports would be hooked too.
This book is my favorite book that I have ever read. I love the way that throughout the book it expresses the lows and highs of Ernie's life and everything surrounding it. There are many different emotions in this book, which connect very directly to the part of his life mentioned Ernie expressed emotions of happiness, sadness, and formality. Ernie showed the expressions of happiness and sadness through the life of his family, work, and his relationship with God. All of these emotions relate together in the sense that there are Ernie's core memories, good or bad there have affected his life and have made him the man he is today. I loved how all of the emotions in this book connect to one another and show that even with a roller coaster of events that may happen in Ernie's life, He persevered through all of it and found a bright outlook on his life.
The beginning of the book was very formal. Ernie introduced himself as if one were meeting him in person for the first time, or as if you have never heard of his name before. The structure of the formal introduction was well-formatted and gave you a good hook into the book and his life. This book was split into a whole bunch of different stories about his life throughout his childhood up until currently. The book's cover shows what Ernie Johnson Jr. looks like and gives the reader a good view of his structure as a person.
Throughout books, the author usually is trying to convey an important message or theme. In this story, the theme that I received from this book is to take your life one day at a time and to cherish every moment you get. I feel this message was portrayed well throughout the whole book. One place where his spectacular word choice was shown is when he was talking to his dad about finding his own path: “Find what you’re passionate about–what makes your heart beat a little faster– and then go after it with all you’ve got” (Johnson 56). This quote is an important part of the book because it shows that Ernie had his own path in life and didn’t have to follow the baseball path that his dad took. With as close as Ernie was with Dad and for him to endure struggle, it really shows the importance of having a good relationship and cherishing every moment like it's the last.
When it comes to reading, you want to be hooked. You want to be able to sit down and just read, not caring about what is going on around you, and floating into another world. This book Unscripted does just that. It is an amazing book that gets you on the edge of your seat and makes you keep wanting to read till the book is fully complete to see Ernie’s life unfold. Ernie does a great job with his word choice and tones in this story, which really helps the progression of the story and makes this book so worth reading. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially if you do know of Ernie Johnson. I would give this autobiography a 5-star rating.
