Cake Catastrophe
I’m a people person—always able to start up conversation and make people feel comfortable when talking to me—but it has never been more difficult to do so than when I walked into Cakes While U Wait in Pewaukee, WI.
My dad and I wanted to get my mom a gourmet birthday cake for her 50th birthday. We thought we would go to Cakes While U wait over Pic N Save where we usually get our cakes, solely for the reason that we wanted a special cake for my mom instead of the typical grocery store cake. Their website three-tiered masterpieces clad in bright ribbons of fondant and represents their business well. We didn’t bother to look at yelp’s review. Had we done that we never would’ve gone there.
As we walked in the bakery, I was immediately stunned by the deadness of the workers. There were no smiles anywhere in this place; I wasn’t even greeted. I then proceeded to the front desk without a hello or any acknowledgment from anyone. An employee walked up to the counter and rolled her eyes like I was an inconvenience and didn’t say a word. I didn’t get a “How can I help you?”, let alone a “Hello”. When asking questions about the cakes she gave the most basic answers. Some answers didn’t even apply to the question. I asked what the best flavor was and named a few that I like and she replied with, “Yeah”. The employee said “yeah” to almost everything I said, lacking care and concern about the customer.
My dad and I gave the employee some colors my mother liked, for example, some soft pastel light yellows, and hints of gold and shimmer. We told them to make the cake subtle, since my mom was turning 50 we were thinking of an elegant beautiful cake. We told them our ideas of what the cake should look like, but about 3 days later we came to realize they did the exact opposite. The cake was white with bright orange polka dots on it. They stuck to their deadline which was 3 days, but it was apparent that they made the cake in what seemed like 10 minutes due to the lumpy air pockets under the fondant, the flour streaks dusted on the cake like snow, and misspelling. They claimed to have run out of yellow fondant. We were underwhelmed by what the cakes on the website looked like compared to ours. They show extremely detailed and extravagant cakes on their page, perhaps those were the only cakes they have actually done well.
Finally, when we went to put candles on the cake, we noticed the writing, “Happy Birthday Karen”. The cursive was clearly rushed and the baker forgot to put the dash on the t when doing cursive so it read “birlday”. The letters in my moms name were short, small, and smashed together because her name couldn’t fit on the cake. When paying around $45-50, versus 20 for an awesome cake at Pic n Save…. this is unacceptable.
From the extremely rude employees, to the rushed cake, I would never go to Cakes While U Wait ever again. I highly advise you do not go here.
