Once you know of the unwritten standards
Your life gets defined by words and numbers
People look at you upwards and downwards
Judge your every move forward and backward

Why compare each other to another
When we know inside we are poles apart
Why compare another to each other
When we know we are unique in our hearts

From the sky everyone's seen as the same
But all we do is fight one another
All of us unique and special what shame
Shame we don't see we're in this together

Refuse to conform refuse to fit in
Know those who get sucked in die first, Pumpkin.


The author's comments:

This sonnet is about being judged and judging others. We all judge and compare ourselves to one another when in reality there is nothing to compare each other to, becasue we are all unique and special in our own ways. This sonnet is also about how if you get wrapped up in your own perception of certain things based on people's standards, it will hurt you in the long run and may lead to depression or worse- suicide.

I was inspired to write this sonnet when I read an article about teenagers commiting suicide becasue of other people's perceptions of them. Being a teenager myself, I can honestly say that judgement is one of the biggest issues that we teenagers have to face on a day to day basis. I think that this issue needs more attention becasue the suicide rates for teenagers are increasing every year. I hope that this poem will help people realize that you shouldn't judge people because everyone is different and everyone has their own definition of beauty.
