A Light Among Eager Darkness
In a deep wood owned by this one large town
Buried out of sight is a lonely cave
Stone once black, now smeared with mud till it’s brown
The inside so dark, not a soul to save
Its rock is abused and drawn all over
And only a few trees for protection
The branches, thin and weak, barely cover
The cave sits without any affection
Then came two wanderers, a boy and girl
She was stomping all about and shouting
He was solemn yet bright just like a pearl
Then they found the cave while on their outing
“Let us go in!” the girl cried eagerly
Reluctantly, the boy agreed meagerly
Inside they walk and find to their surprise
A fiery flame so full of warmth, so fierce
It took a time for him to realize
The dark reaching out to the fire, to pierce
They’re startled to find the light of the fire
Drains their faces of color, and the eyes too
Till race and age are tales from a liar
And ghosts of their forms remain as a clue
Now garbage and rubbish littered the ground
From past guests who dumped out all their troubles
Crunching under foot, louder with each sound
That amplified so loud like it doubled
There was also old moss and burnt up wood
But why it was there was misunderstood
As the fire shimmered and danced with delight
Shadows flashed and they danced all ‘cross the wall
They were fearsome figures that forced a fright
But vanished before it made their skin crawl
The girl grew weary of there in the grotto
She’d start insulting how unclean it was
“Always be perfect” she’d quote her motto
And then toss around trash just because
The girl stalked off, eager to get away
The boy turned when his ears caught a whisper
Like the cave was begging for him to stay
He left, ignoring as they grew crisper
As they left the fire died to a flicker
And the winds cried as the dark grew thicker
