In the Stars

Every once in a while, stars like to fall.
They fall fast, and hard, and burn bright and hot,
Until they break through the many walls
Of the atmosphere, and shatter. I got
Caught up in staring at the constellations,
Yearning to be among them. But then I
Saw one shatter and break; the fascination
And desperation started to die.
If I became a star, would I fall too,
Destined to become nothing more than ash?
Despite the fear, I yearned to become new,
To be reborn in the stars with a flash.

My story will be written in the cosmos
To be taught and told in the years that follow.

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece originally about not wanting to fall in love for fear of falling out of it. But like most of my works tend to do, it went on its own path. This poem has become one about the fear of growing up, and following your dreams. If you try to fly, to soar, to follow your dreams, will that only lead to falling, to failure? Will you decide to follow your dreams despite the risk of failing, in the hope that you will make it in the end? Or will you let the fear consume you?
