Who To Be
Do you see that girl with the bleach-blonde hair?
Talking and laughing with her friends over there?
I bet you're thinking that she's just a klutz
Miss Popularity, making boys go nuts
But I bet you didn't know she's got a brain in her head
For all the flirting she does she's never gone to bed
She'll be graduating med school come next May
Surprised a beauty queen could be a doctor someday?
Do you see that boy with the cross tattoo?
Hands folded, eyes closed, thinking things through?
I bet you're thinking he's just a good-for-nothing jerk
Dropped out of high school and can't find work
But I bet you didn't know he's got a college degree
He's working on a Master's in Youth Ministry
Got elected as director of the Outreach Board
Surprised that such a ruffian would ever serve the Lord?
Look at you staring at these poor souls
You had them playing all the wrong roles
I wonder, when they look at you, what will they see?
Just another nobody telling them who to be
Do you see that girl with her nose in a book?
Scribbling notes without a second look?
I bet you're thinking she's just another brainiac
No social life but at the top of her class
But I bet you didn't know all the problems she's had
Looks so perfect but she's got it pretty bad
Dad's gone, Mom's in jail, she's losing hope
Surprised that she's paying her tuition selling dope?
Do you see that boy with the ripped up jeans?
Flannel shirt, shaggy hair, looking kind of mean?
I bet you're thinking he's living out on the road
Penniless, jobless, ain't got a home
But I bet you didn't know how he got those scars
No, he didn't spend his nights fighting in bars
He just came home from carrying a gun
When they left, there were twenty, now he's the only one
Look at you staring at these poor souls
Cause you had them cast in all the wrong roles
I wonder, when they look at you, what will they see?
Just another nobody telling them who to be
You had no idea how wrong you'd be
Judging them just cause they look like that
You have no idea how stupid you sound
I bet you wanna just take it all back
Look at you, staring at these poor souls
You had them playing all the wrong roles
I wonder, when they look at you, what will they see?
Just another nobody telling them who to be
You're just another nobody telling them who to be
