The Sweetest Flower Has No Scent
Your Cigarette still burns,
blowing smoke in my face
A follow-up for the medication
you used everyday
You'll drink my wine
to pass the time,
While I sit here in the cold,
the more comfortable place
I see-
Charcoal silhouettes
and blood-red skies
The infant standing like a birdwatcher,
watching her mother cry
The loved, the lover and their way of life
Sleep lightly with her heart away,
just for tonight
Hey, hey lover, your cigarette's still burning
And I, I want the smoke to pass
Walking through the
streets of yesterday
With a lover I don't love
Sat on the bench in the park
where we used to swing
Cold and damp under sidewalk chalk
I see-
Charcoal silhouettes and blood-red skies
The motion of a hand,
waving goodbye
Lovers smoking cigareetes on their porch
Sinking deep like the moon, into doubt
Hey, hey lover, your cigarette's still burning
And I, I want the smoke to pass
I was the ink in your pen
until you went blind
And now a clean white page
is a blur through your eyes
So I'll walk a little faster,
advancing forwards
Cause' there's some better place
I could be heading towards
