Fey and Fading
A young girl sat over a fey-bright bay,
Her beauty as distinct as the sea.
Her hair was as brilliant as fire,
Her eyes as green as the shire.
Her mother came out of the house one day
With a burning visage of anger.
“Daughter cease your play
You must find a trade that pays.
Your beauty will not last,
It will fade away.”
The daughter glared upon her mother with a snort,
Her metal heart heavy with revulsion.
What did her mother know- she wasn’t beautiful.
“My beauty will not fade,
It will last as long as I.
This I promise, Mother, this I promise by the sky.”
Her mother saw the revulsion
In the young woman’s heart.
A heart of metal bars it was
For it let no one in.
Her beauty was her vanity
And one day it would lead
To something more destructive
That one can ever heed.
It was many a year later
Before the young girl saw the truth.
When beauty fades- and it does fade,
The truth will be unveiled.
Her hair was withered gray now
And her eyes could no longer heal.
The girl now lived in poverty
Her only house the streets.
But there was nothing she could do
Because her beauty had become a mockery.
