A Day In Old MIlwaukee
The time of closing comes.
The moon rises outside,
the sun rises inside.
The city comes to life,
just as the day before.
The mail gets delivered,
the mothers get their milk.
The sausage store opens,
and streets become crowded,
just as the day before.
The furniture maker,
banging on a project.
The newspaper office,
wreaks of fresh printed ink,
just as the day before.
The young Watson explores,
frolicking through the stores.
He waves to the street cop,
then whisks a warm cookie,
just as the day before.
Hours of the day pass,
the people return home.
Tired from a day’s work,
beds taunt the little ones,
just as the day before.
The time of closing comes.
The sun rises outside,
the moon rises inside.
The city comes to life,
just as the day before.

I wrote this piece for a poetry competition for the Milwaukee Public Museum. It is about an exhibit, the Streets of Old Milwaukee, where the wax figures come to life at night.
