Why Can I Not Say What I Wish to Say?
Why can I not say what I wish to say?
I have never felt such sorrow from my words
These same words that I thought would never betray
Why do they not listen to me, I who made them?
I who slaved over each and every chosen form
I who braved the death of night and the diabolic worm
Why do they now thunder and storm?
As if they could speak without me
Without me they would not know what to say
I thought of that once, to let them despair
Watch them drown alone in their dismay
But so merciful am I that I did not do this deed
I did not leave them be, though I might yet say
Why can I not say what I wish to say?
My words do not heed my words
They crawl into their corner and shed their tears
As if their fears were theirs’, and not mine
Mine who had written them in my heart
The beating of my heart I made into art
What words could replace blood with ink?
What words could voice their own word
As if they themselves could think?
Betrayal, how cruel, and now my tears
Replace my blood and ink, replace my words
My tears that so often come when my words did too
When my words had failed, my tears had not
Why do my words not know their lot? Why not?!
Remain alone, they say, and so they leave me
Come back, my words, or forever grieve me
