they tell you over and over.
the repetition of the phrase engulfs you;
the knuckles on your hands are white
from holding on so tight
to these little words
that come so often
but are so difficult
to not let slip
from your exhausted fingers.

As anyone who is depressed or is having any sort of hard time knows, friends and family often tell you "it gets better." This is a difficult thing to hear when nothing is getting better and hope is slipping from your grasp.
