Eyes Open
Only some notice the days when the sun is shining brighter.
When the trees are full of color.
When the world’s completely still.
Only some notice the warmth caressed on their shoulders.
When buildings are visibly older.
When an eccentric city turns dim.
Only some have reflections from the Arno dancing in their eyes.
Reflection that takes them further.
Looking deeper into the realm of Possibility.
Only some can feel the light escaping through closed gates.
Breaking, carving, penetrating the iron composition.
But turning soft onto their skin.
Do you see the sky melting into darkness?
Do you taste the refinement of nature?
Do you smell the infirmity painted on the marble?
Do you hear the calm complexity of the night?
Do you feel different?
It takes a certain kind
to stray away from the partially blind,
And view the world for themselves.
Eyes wide open and
Willing to climb
To see the most ornate views.
