Childhood Memory
I sat at the edge of the hospital bed,
My great grandma lay gazing at my cousins and I.
The cancer had spread to her mouth,
She could not speak,
She lay in silence forever.
A dry erase board governing her communication,
Her emotions and thoughts controlled by a marker.
She wrote.
She wrote us what she wanted,
What she begged of us.
To be strong.
To be ourselves.
And to always remember you define you others words do not
Her wise words keep me going,
Keep me strong on my weakest days.
