Memory Poem
The Playoffs.
It’s what every team works for during the
grueling, grinding, gut-wrenching, REGULAR season.
(Anything but REGULAR)
Only 8 make it.
How do you win a football game?
Not as individuals, not by skill, not by using trick plays.
Football is a team game, and playing as a team is the only way you can win.
It was a cool, dark, October night. The Royal Oak Chargers vs The Shelby Lions.
The Lions had a dream team,
(As their dynasty of a program does every year)
but we had a pretty good team too.
Still underdogs anyway.
Back and forth we went, with them leading the whole time. 6-0. 6-6. 13-6. 13-12. 20-12.
The game was close all night.
Then the fourth quarter came.
A great drive got us some momentum.
Down to the two yard line.
The crowd was pounding on the bleachers as loud as they could, trying to spark a Chargers comeback.
I fumble and can't get it back.
We couldn't recover from that.
Another crushing defeat for the Chargers.
26-20.
I could taste victory until it was sucked out of me on that play.
We had lost the game, but will live another day.
