A candle burning in the dark
A family gathered round
Their faces pale in the flickering light
While shadows crept down from the walls
And grasped at their cold feet

A gunshot fired from overhead
And rattle the wood trap-door
The youngest child squeaked in fear
As a shout rang out from above
And steps thundered on the roof

The mother sagged in weak relief
As the thunder quieted down
They had made it one more night
Safe from the enemies once again
The family slept in the candle-flame bright
