Silver Linings
Do you see the melancholy
Drift of the clouds
As they loom above our heads
And darkness they bring
With them - the gloom, the grey
All hope dissolves,
All colour leaves my cheeks
And those colourful raincoats look ominous
As though the day has died
And the flowers are withering
And rain, heavy and wet
Starts to fall on my face
My hands, my extremities
Soaked with water
Cold and unwelcome
A roar of thunder, the sudden gasp
That leaves our lips
For the rain seems as though
It will drown the Earth mercilessly
While there is no Noah
To save us from this sorrow
And the lightning flashes across the sky
Leaving us shuddering,
Running towards shelter
And the children peek out the windows
As if the first ray of sunlight
Is just about to touch the grass
Turn the grey into colour
The rain pours down in sheets
For hours that feel like days
And when eve arrives,
It halts, leaving in its wake
Puddles and lakes
And the people curse the day
For it has been spoilt by the rain
But do you not see
The hopeful beam of light
Just starting to appear
As the clouds turn from
Dusty grey to cotton tufts
And a glint of golden, a tinge of red
Seeping through from behind the
Largest cloud, the silver lining
That soothes, that sings
That makes hope bloom
In our hearts again.
