My Dying Purple Heart
I couldn’t help but cry the day you left
You promised me you would return
But after months of waiting
I began to question your promise
My fears were certain when the letter came.
Reading it made my heart sink.
I was mortified.
It was then I realized
You would never return.
I lost my love to the bullet of a sniper
from the deserts of Afghanistan.
You died while trying to protect me
and your home.
Now that you’re gone
there is an empty space in my bed
and the ring I bear on my finger
seems to be nothing but a mockery.
Because I loved you so
I mourn for you every day
Wishing you were here by my side
Telling me everything will be alright
