A Four Letter Word
They say it’s blind,
Yet it knows no bounds.
Virgil said it conquers all.
In fairytales,
It always prevails,
It slays the dragon and rescues the princess,
It moves the armored knight onward.
Little girls grow up
Thinking that it’s beautiful,
Wonderful,
Perfect, even.
Then later, they think
It makes them more mature,
More like grown ups.
They think they understand it so well,
When they encounter its “first”.
It takes many forms, and
It seems like everyone looks for
A “true” version of it,
Whatever that means.
I wish them luck.
After all,
Didn’t Willy Shakespeare say it “never ran smooth”?
True words those are.
In fact,
There’s a war of rainbow
Going on about it
Right at this moment.
Countless songs have tried to tell me
What it is.
One musician claimed it involved
Pina coladas
And getting caught in the rain.
Yet another said it was
Nothing
But a losing game.
But one famous group told the world
It was all a person needed.
Entire books are dedicated to it.
An entire genre is based around its mystery,
Its intrigue,
Its unexplainable pull.
A whole day is celebrated in its honor.
Everyone has their own opinion about it.
The recently-divorced say it’s
Stupid
And worthless,
The recently- single population
Says it’s delightful!
While it lasts.
Then it sinks away in a pool of misery,
And tears,
And wadded up tissues,
Saying goodbye in the thoughts of memories past.
The currently-in-love say it’s perfect.
The young girls pretty much say the same thing.
(Then again,
It’s not like they would know any better.)
The young boys think it’s absolutely
Disgusting.
Revolting.
I mean- kissing a girl?
Can you imagine?!
Gross!!!
Me?
I just think it’s
COMPLICATED
With all of the conflicting things
People say
And think about it.
I just hope
That when it gifts
(Or curses?)
Me
With a chance encounter,
It’ll be SIMPLE.
