The Golden Web
For so long I’ve kissed your feet
And placed you on a pedestal from afar
I’ve worshipped your gentle gaze in secret
And my heart has screamed silently for months
In agony, heartache
My soul bound to you by cupid’s chain
A wistful chain I forged by myself
A golden web I spun with my longing
And got myself trapped in it
You loved another, among other things
And it was obvious that you and me
Just could not be
But there was always that lethal glimmer of hope
A rosy spider who persuaded me
That you could come to love me
And again I would find myself trapped in the web
Bound by Aphrodite’s chains
Tortured by Eros
And lost in your big brown eyes
Then suddenly you made some remark
A casual sentence
Five words that made it real
And it was as if the addict lost her drug
The child’s Band-Aid was ripped off
And the nasty cut cleaned out
So my soul cried out as the chain broke away
My heart burned for the pain of the fast dissolving web
But when I realized the truth, I could only laugh
I’m free from you
Free from my wretched desire
And I laughed and cried like a maniac as I related my sad tale
To my friend and confidant
What a spectacle!
The war is over, yet the explosions are only just happening!
And in peacetime, I pour my sorrows onto a page
And drown them in a sea of nonsense.
