Fallout
That glint of a gazing eye in a face turned to the side.
Broad wall of cheek, blocking me from your closeness;
A tight mouth, contemptful of something
Stretching itself like a thin, plastic epidermis
Over the mouth of your bottle of time:
The one you want to keep closed with cupcake-love desire,
A premature version of the fermented emotion I pour so carefully
As not to spill it, only to have it drape over the sides of your glass like a curtain,
Leaving it sealed and empty.
And so forms the chasm between you and I:
It opened up five years ago,
When you smiled at my chocolates
More than your heart would smile on my working soul’s own construction
Around your dreams.
