Close
Two freckles on the back of your neck
Sit quietly in my gaze –
My pen goes slack on my notebook when I
Catch their immobile dance.
Glancing into their shy world behind your right ear,
I see how close they are – almost touching –
And I feel a tug in my hand, feel my finger
Wanting to trace a brief line, to gently connect them.
Desperately close and strictly set apart,
I know that if they had hands, they’d
Be stretched out towards each other.
Foolish, I call myself, when I catch myself
Envying those two freckles on the back of your neck
For being so close to you.
