I ask you to let me be with the people I love.
I ask you this so I can go and create memories and happiness to nourish myself with so I can grow into a whole person.
Because I have finally found people with whom I belong, and am happy with.
You may be wondering why friends of mine come and go so quickly.
The truth is; I outgrow them.
They start to drown while I keep my head above water and I pull myself up onto the rowboat of people passing by, and now they become my friends, and none of us need to swim anymore because we are all rowing, keeping each other dry.
So I ask of you to let me row my boat, even though it might sink, but then maybe I’ll finally learn how to swim on my own.
Because every young girl is naïve, and always needs someone to save her?
Where did the freedom to get hurt, and get our hearts broken go?
I fear that the next generation will never scrape their knees at school
And never experience the love from the nurse that gives you a band-aid
Why can’t I have the luxury of pain, and the wisdom that comes afterwards?
Like the rainbow after the storm
They keep us in the safety of darkness and our ignorance exposes how it tortures us.
So let me grow.
Let the flower that is my soul sit outside, even with all the murders and the rapists and the wars and the drugs and the violence and the storms and the tears and the abuse and the poisonous things.
Because when I am outside with all those things; I will also get sun
And I will get rain,
And I will grow.

The author's comments:
Here's to our adolescent need for freedom. Here's to the girls who can't stay out too late, but their brothers can, because they are boys. This poem is a gasp for air from suburban suffocation. The world is a scary place if you let it scare you.
